Course Information

First Step:  Click here to sign up to attend the NIFLA course.  The National Institute of Family and Life Advocates (NIFLA) began offering its course, Institute in Limited Obstetric Ultrasound, in 1998, and has now educated over 2,500 medical professionals in the provision of limited ob ultrasound. This three day course is the foundational educational tool for PMCs that want to offer ultrasound at their clinics.  It consists of two days didactic training and one day of live ultrasound scanning.

Second Step
:  Obtain hands-on training.  The standards of medical practice require that to become competent in providing this service a nurse must have, in addition to the instruction at NIFLA, 50-75 supervised scans overseen by an RDMS and the medical director for the Pregnancy Resource Medical Clinic. Soundview Imaging Partners provides that instruction.

We provide RNs with both didactic and hands-on instruction for proficiency in imaging skills to safely and competently perform limited OB ultrasound scans.

Sample of course objectives.  Upon completion of this course, the nurse will be able to:

 - List indications for limited OB sonograms.
 - Image critical anatomical landmarks for intrauterine pregnancy: bladder, uterus, cervix, vagina, gestational sac.
 - Survey uterus in longitudinal and transverse planes and document pregnancy location, uterine orientation.
 - Obtain appropriate measurements.
 - Recognize signs of ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage, provide precautions and plan for appropriate follow up.
 - Understand basic physics and instrumentation principles related to ultrasound imaging.
 - Identify and document fetal cardiac activity.
 - Describe ultrasound findings.
 - Comply with AWHONN guidelines.
